About Alphons Joseph

Born in Kaachery, Thrissur of Kerala, the southern state of India, he is the second son of Koladi Joseph and Thankamma. Hailing from a musically affluent Christian family, he was introduced to music by his father, who is a trained Carnatic singer and tablist. His bonding with music was further strengthened with the presence of his uncle, KK Paul, who was a well known violinist and his brothers – pianist Joemon and sitarist Paulson. Alphons took his first step towards his formation as a musician by undergoing professional training in Carnatic classical music from Shri. Mangad K Nadeshan. While pursuing his graduate studies, he received the “Kala Prathibha” award from Calicut University (Best talent of the University in Arts) for the years 1990 and 1992. Alphons considers Philip, a talented musician from Thrissur, as his mentor and guru. He was the one who diverted Alphons to Western Classical Music and ghazals. He then moved on to equip himself with Western Music by learning Western Music Theory and the classical guitar at the Trinity College of Music in London for which he obtained 5th Grade and 7th grade respectively.

Alphons is the lead guitarist, vocalist and one of the founders of the gospel music band, Rexband, which has produced some wonderful albums. This band experimented a lot in gospel music by blending Western music with Hindustani and Carnatic. Having listeners all over the world, Rexband has been performing at the World Youth Day celebrations since 2002. From 2000 onwards, he started working as a composer and a sound engineer at Asianet Radio 657AM radio station in Dubai Media City, composing many ad jingles and title songs.

His foray into films started with Bhadran’s Vellithira in 2003 in which the songs Hridayasakhi and Pachamanga won immediate attention. Top Directors like Sibi Malayil, Kamal, Vinayan were quick in recognizing and tapping this incredible talent: Sibi Malayil in Jalolsavam, Kamal in Manjupoloru Penkutty, Vinayan in Athishayan and Black Cat and Amal Neerad in Big B. The songs of Big B  notably Vidaparukayano catapulted him into the big league of music directors and through this song he introduced Shreya Ghosal into Malayalam film industry. His 2010 releases included Premlal’s Aathmakatha starring superstar Sreenivasan, Shyamaprasad’s Elektra and Cocktail by Arun. His 2011 projects kicked off with Leo Thadevus's Payyans and new projects include Roshan Andrews’s Casanovva starring superstar Mohanlal, multi-starrer film  Seniors by Vaishakh and Uppukandam Brothers Back in Action by TS Suresh Babu.

His strong commitment to work, his holistic approach to composing, his meticulous preparation, his humility, his equal attention given to both vocals and orchestration, all together form his secret to success. The specialty of Alphons is his uncanny ability to use fusion that blends Indian ragas with Western notes and his willingness to experiment with the unknown and unexplored realms of music. His favorites are melody compositions and some of his compositions are symphonic in nature. He won the Film Critics Award for the song Kera Nirakal of Jalolsavam in 2004. Alphons received great appreciation for singing the superhit song Aaromale for the film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, which was composed by Oscar winning musician AR Rahman.

Alphons is currently pursuing an M.A. (Master in Arts) in Music. He was a prominent judge in Amrita TV Superstar series. He was also part of AR Rahman's Jai Ho Concert - The Journey Home. In the tour, being a solo artist he played the vocal harmony synth with the band. Recently he was invited by A. Rahman to work with him in the upcoming movie Enthiran's background score.

Talking about future plans, Alphons says, “I go where God takes me… never planned anything.” Going by his music compositions and songs it is certain that God is taking him to great heights of musical success and also blessing the music fraternity with innovative compositions, music and styles.
